Considerations Prior To Travel
Ask your self these questions and or follow these suggestions prior to choosing to study abroad:
- When do you want to study abroad (identify the year and term)?
- Do you have skills in another language sufficient to study in that language?
- What part of the world are you interested in?
- What kind of credit do you need to earn while abroad-distribution or professional?
- Are there particular courses that you need to take while abroad?
- Do you have the financial resources to study abroad? Students paying out-of-state tuition rates might pay less for a study abroad program, depending on the cost of living in the host country. Some financial aid packages apply to study abroad programs. A limited number of scholarships are available but applying for them requires advanced planning.
- Do you want to live with other US students or with students (or host a host family) from your host country?
- Why is study abroad important?
- Is study abroad for you?
- Take time and talk with other students who may have gone on the same or a similar study abroad program.
- Talk to individuals in your study abroad office. They may have helpful advice and or prearranged study abroad programs which may fit your needs.
- Investigate all opportunties available.
- Find out what you can on the internet about where you would like to study
- Enroll in a course, or read at least 1 book about this history, culture, and or current events of your region of interest. This will make your visit all the more worth while
- Talk over your options with your family. Let them know your desire to study abroad and they may be able to help you from their own experience. They were young once too!!
- Do you want to earn money while abroad? If so, you may need to consider a student work visa.
