Athlone Institute of Technology is a vibrant, contemporary campus committed to academic excellence in teaching, learning and research. Home to 6,000 students from 62 nations around the globe, the institute is currently ranked 9th nationally in the Irish league table comprising of institutes of technology and universities. The institute offers 200+ industry-focussed programmes on a full and part-time basis. These are distributed across four faculties: The Faculty of Engineering and Informatics, Business and Hospitality, Science and Health, and Continuous, Online, Professional and Distance Learning. The institute also has the authority to award at PhD level in the areas of Microbiology, Toxicology, Polymer Engineering and Software ICT. The institute is also home to three strategic research institutes in Materials, Bioscience, and Software - along with two Technology Gateways (APT and COMAND) - driving market-informed research in collaboration with industry partners.
The Midlands Innovation and Research Centre, the institute's campus business incubator, provides incubation facilities and business development support for knowledge-based start-ups. These three research institutes and two Technology Gateways offer a range of contract services and collaborate with companies of all sizes to solve technical and business challenges – ranging from short term problem-solving engagements to longer term strategic research projects and product development via Enterprise Ireland's Innovation Voucher and Partnership Initiatives. Athlone Institute of Technology is ranked second nationally for the number of Innovation Vouchers completed (427 vouchers valued in excess of €2 million).
