The Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association (CSMTA) was established in 1987
with the expressed purpose of serving the Canadian athletic population. While massage
did exist prior and was practiced widely, it was not developed nor regulated specifically
for the Sport Medicine environment. This has since been done comprehensively and we
are proud of our achievements.
We provide suitably qualified and skilled therapists to our national teams as well as offer our services at the grassroots level. Since our establishment we have developed a comprehensive national education program (certification and ongoing professional development). This involves a comprehensive certification process (mentoring, a written and practical exam), provincial and national AGMs and conferences; parallel professionals are included and frequently attend e.g. Athletic Therapists, Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, unaffiliated massage therapists.
While the focus of our work is Sport Massage, the skillset of our members covers a myriad of complimentary modalities e.g. athletic taping/strapping, acupuncture etc. In the clinical and field environment we have developed an extensive and deep synergistic relationship with our Athletic Therapy and other colleagues which reflect our goal of augmenting athlete performance, treating injuries and preventing injury.
